Online Personal Trainer for Women Over 40
I’m Deb Simpson, a NASM Certified Personal Trainer. I work with women over 40 who are starting from scratch or getting back into a consistent routine, usually because things that used to be easy are becoming harder: stairs, long travel days, and getting up off the floor after playing with the dog.
My online clients train either at home or at their local gym, with two training options:
- Live one-on-one video sessions: I coach you through each workout in real time over Google Meet or FaceTime.
- Online coaching: I write your plan each week, and you train at home or at your gym on your own schedule.
Both start with a free consult, where we go over where you’re starting from, what you want to work toward, and the space and equipment you have to work with.
Why Strength Training Is Harder After 40
Strength training is harder in midlife for women for two reasons: less time and changing hormones. More than half of Americans in their 40s are sandwiched between an aging parent and their own kids. That means many of us spend our days caretaking and refereeing: the kids, our parents, and sometimes even our coworkers. And when it feels like you’re the only adult in the room, your own workouts tend to fall to the bottom of the priority list.
And it’s not just the time we spend taking care of others. Our own biology fights us as we age: estrogen, a hormone that helps us build and keep muscle and bone density, drops through perimenopause and stays low after menopause. According to research on the musculoskeletal effects of menopause, women lose an average of 10% of their bone mineral density during the perimenopausal transition, then 1–2% a year for the first five years after menopause, plus about 0.6% of their muscle mass per year after menopause. Strength training directly counters that decline, for both muscle and bone.
As a virtual personal trainer for women over 40, I design every program to counter muscle and bone loss, which means:
- Functional strength training built around the movements you make every day.
- A planned lighter week every 4 to 6 weeks.
- Intensity from tempo, reps, and sets, not just heavier weight.
- Cardio managed around your strength training instead of treated as an afterthought.
- Weight management guidance: food selection, calorie goals, and protein targets based on standard ranges, so you keep as much muscle as possible while you lose weight.
- Regular check-ins on what’s working, what’s not, and which exercises you loathe, so your plan can be updated with your preferences in mind.
As a woman over 40, I’m dealing with the same time crunch and hormone changes, and as a personal trainer, my philosophy reflects it: training should be fun, it should be challenging, and it should be built for the person you are now. That means accounting for the body and responsibilities you have today, not following a cookie-cutter program written for a 23-year-old whose only dependent is a houseplant.
Two Ways I Train Women Over 40
As an online personal trainer for women, I work with two groups: beginners, including women coming back after time off, and women who have experience strength training and know their way around a gym.
Live 1:1 Online Training
Sounds like you if: “I’m new to this, or it’s been a while. I want someone to show me what to do and make sure I’m doing it right.”
How it works: Live 60-minute video sessions once or twice a week, plus workouts for the days in between. Set up a laptop or phone so I can see you move.
Each session: A check-in, a warm-up targeted to your form, working sets with coaching, and a cool-down with next steps.
What I handle: Exercise selection, progression, and real-time coaching on every rep, so you build good form from the first session.
Online Coaching
Sounds like you if: “I know my way around a gym and I know my goals. I just don’t want to be the one planning the workouts anymore.”
How it works: A custom workout plan every week, with video demos of each exercise. Train anywhere and anytime, on whatever schedule works for you.
Each week: A text check-in for your feedback, plus a 30-minute call every fourth week to review your progress.
What I handle: Exercise selection, progression, and form review on any video you send, so the only thing you focus on is the workout.
Beginner or experienced, your program is built around your goals and where you are today, not what you could do 20 years ago. It’s also built around your equipment, whether that’s bands and a few dumbbells at home or a commercial gym full of specialized machines; send me photos or a quick video of what you’ve got, and I’ll work from that. Between workouts, I’m your accountability partner, and if a question comes up, text me and I’ll reply within 24 hours.
Meet Your Functional Fitness Coach

I didn’t come to fitness as an athlete; I came to it reluctantly, with high blood pressure and an extra 80 pounds on my frame. Walking, then running, took the weight off, but also created their share of injuries.
Turns out, what I needed to get healthy in my 30s isn’t what I need today, and each time that’s changed, I’ve adapted my training to match where my body is instead of where it used to be. These days, the primary thing I’m training for is aging well: keeping as much function as I can, for as long as I can, so I get to live on my terms through my 50s, 60s, and beyond.
For most of my clients, living on their terms means being able to do the things they need to and participate in the activities they want to, all without the fear of their physical condition holding them back. Their goals are practical: gain strength, keep their weight at a comfortable level, and work on their endurance so one overbooked day doesn’t wreck the rest of their week.
That’s why, as a functional fitness coach, I build programs around the challenges we face day to day: navigating uneven terrain, lifting groceries into the trunk, pushing a heavy wheelbarrow around the garden, and having the endurance to get through a three-day meeting in another city.
Online Personal Trainer Cost
I’ve found that middle age makes me appreciate a transparent shopping experience, and finding an online personal trainer should be no different: clear pricing with clear guidance about what’s included. With me, the cost of online personal training depends on which package you choose and how often you train.
Online personal training packages are billed every 4 weeks, with no long-term commitment. After the free consult, Live 1:1 Online Training begins with a $55 initial workout session. If you continue with a plan, that fee is credited toward your first 4 weeks. Online Coaching is one flat rate every 4 weeks.
Active-duty military, veterans, first responders, teachers, and nurses get 5% off online personal training packages.

I try to keep my terms fair for both of us:
- Nothing renews automatically. At the end of each 4-week cycle, you’ll receive an invoice for the next 4 weeks of training. To continue working with me, simply pay the invoice and your session and/or check-in time blocks will be reserved.
- Cancel or reschedule at least 24 hours ahead. Sessions cancelled with 24 hours’ notice can be rescheduled within the same 4-week cycle.
How to Get Started
Whether Live 1:1 Online Training or Online Coaching fits you better, the next step is a free consult call. It’s your chance to tell me what you want to work toward and what you’re working around, and our chance to see if we’re a good fit for each other.
If Live 1:1 Online Training is the right fit, you’ll start with a $55 initial workout session, and that $55 is credited toward your first 4 weeks when you sign up.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is online personal training per month?
Online personal training with me starts at $125 every 4 weeks for Online Coaching, where I write your plan each week, and $220 every 4 weeks for Live 1:1 Online Training, where we train together over video once a week and I write your workouts for the days we don’t meet. See every option and price.
Why work with an online personal trainer for women over 50?
Whether you’re finishing perimenopause or past menopause, your hormone profile is changing, and bone density and muscle mass are both in decline. Strength training counters that decline, and as an online personal trainer for women over 50, I build every program around it: planned lighter weeks, intensity that comes from tempo, reps, and sets instead of only heavier weight, and regular check-ins so the plan changes as you do.
What should I look for in an online personal trainer for women over 40?
Look for an online personal trainer who specializes in building programs around the body you have today. That means programming built for perimenopause and menopause, workouts that fit your equipment and schedule, regular check-ins so your plan changes when something isn’t working, and pricing you can see before you book a call.
What does a functional personal trainer do?
A functional personal trainer builds your workouts around the movements you make in everyday life: pushing, pulling, squatting, hinging, carrying, and balancing. The goal of functional training is strength you can actually use, like lifting groceries into the trunk, walking on uneven ground, or getting up off the floor after playing with the dog.
How do I get started?
Start by booking a free consult call, where we talk through your goals, what you’re working around, and whether we’re a good fit. Live 1:1 Online Training starts with a $55 initial workout session, credited toward your first 4 weeks when you sign up. Online Coaching begins on the date you select, with your week’s workouts delivered to your training calendar.
How do payments work?
You’re billed every 4 weeks, before the beginning of each 4-week cycle. Nothing renews automatically: at the end of each cycle, you’ll receive an invoice for the next 4 weeks, and paying it keeps your session and/or check-in time blocks reserved. I accept credit cards, Apple Pay, Cash App, and Venmo.
What happens on the free consult call?
Think of it as a 15- to 30-minute meet and greet. You tell me what you want to work toward, what you’re working around, and what space and equipment you have, and we both get a sense of each other’s style.
What if I need to cancel a session or stop training?
Life happens. Cancel or reschedule at least 24 hours ahead. Sessions cancelled with 24 hours’ notice can be rescheduled within the same 4-week cycle. Nothing renews automatically, so when each invoice arrives, you decide whether to keep training, talk with me about switching to a different plan, or pause your training.
What equipment do I need?
Whatever you already have, including nothing. With no equipment, we start with bodyweight, and resistance bands are an inexpensive investment when you’re ready for more. If you already have gear, whether that’s a few dumbbells at home or a full commercial gym, send me photos or a quick video of what you’re working with, and I’ll build a custom program around it.
Can I train if I have aches, injuries, or joint issues?
Yes, as long as you have medical clearance to exercise. Tell me about any aches, injuries, or joint issues on the free consult call, along with any specific restrictions from your doctor. I’ll choose exercises that work around what hurts, and nothing in your program will go past what your doctor has cleared.
How do check-ins work?
It depends on your plan. With Live 1:1 Online Training, every session starts with a check-in. With Online Coaching, you get a weekly text check-in, plus a 30-minute call every fourth week to review your progress. Your feedback from that call shapes your next 4 weeks of workouts, and we can move the call up if you need to talk sooner. On either plan, you can text me anytime, and I’ll reply within 24 hours.
Can I get an online personal trainer and nutrition help in one plan?
Yes. As your online personal trainer, I include nutrition guidance with both plans: help with food selection, plus calorie and protein targets based on standard ranges, so you keep as much muscle as possible if weight loss is your goal.
